Halfway to the North Pole, With Nothing to Slow the Weather Down
The Village of Cadott describes itself as "Half Way between the Equator and the North Pole." It sits where Highway 27 crosses Highway 29 and the Yellow River, east of Chippewa Falls. Cadott was incorporated in 1895 and had 1,498 residents at the 2020 census. Since 1987 the area has also hosted the Country Fest and Rock Fest music festivals, on grounds outside the village.
Around the village the land opens into farm country. That is the fact that matters most for roofs. Open fields do little to break up a storm before it arrives, so houses and farm buildings out here take wind and hail head on.
Storm Damage on Cadott Roofs: What to Look For
Summer storms in the Chippewa Valley bring hail and straight-line wind. The National Weather Service's Twin Cities office recorded significant straight-line wind damage in Chippewa County from the storms of May 15, 2025. Storms like that rarely hit a county evenly. One town can lose shingles while the next gets only rain.
After wind
- Shingle tabs or ridge caps in the yard.
- Shingles that are lifted, creased or sitting crooked.
- Steel panels with loose edges, missing trim or a row of popped screws.
After hail
- Dents in vents, flashing, downspouts and metal siding.
- Granules washed out at the bottom of downspouts.
- Dimples in steel roofing, which are often cosmetic but should be documented.
Hail bruising on shingles is hard to see from the ground and easy to see up close. We inspect for free, give you dated photos and tell you plainly what we think. Our hail and storm damage roof repair page explains how the insurance side works in Wisconsin. If the roof is open and rain is coming, go to emergency roof repair and tarping or call now.
Village Homes, Farmhouses and Steel-Roofed Outbuildings
A village incorporated in 1895 has more than a century of roofs on it.
Older village homes
Story-and-a-half and two-story houses with steeper roofs, chimneys and porches. Expect board decking, and sometimes more than one layer of old shingles. Leaks start at flashing and valleys, and a targeted roof repair is often all that is needed.
Ranches and later houses
Simple gables at a low pitch. They are quick to re-roof and prone to ice at the eaves. When the shingles are done, a complete roof replacement is the time to add ice and water membrane and fix the attic venting.
Farmhouses, barns and sheds
Steel is the usual answer on farm buildings, and it suits a farmhouse just as well. Our steel and standing seam metal roofing page covers both panel types, including re-roofing pole barns and machine sheds.
Roofing Permits in Cadott: What the Village Publishes
Cadott is more specific than most small municipalities. The village's land use permit application, which is reviewed by the zoning inspector, includes these two statements:
- "No construction information needs to be submitted for shingling, windows or doors, (if the exact same size) or other simple replacements."
- "There is no zoning review required for shingling, window or door replacements, (if the exact same size) or interior alterations not involving a change of use."
That tells you a straightforward re-shingle is treated lightly. It does not say in so many words that no form is needed, and the same document warns that fees double if work starts before a required permit is issued. So we ask the village before we start, every time.
Outside the village limits, the town and Chippewa County are the authorities. Statewide, Wisconsin's Uniform Dwelling Code still applies: no new roofing over two or more existing layers.

Cadott Roofing Questions, Answered
Does the Village of Cadott require a permit for re-shingling a roof?
The village's land use permit application says there is no zoning review required for shingling, and that no construction information needs to be submitted for shingling or other simple replacements. It does not spell out whether a permit form is still expected, so we confirm with the village before work starts. Properties outside the village limits fall under their town and Chippewa County instead.
A storm hit Cadott last night and shingles are missing. What should I do first?
Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground, and photos of any water stains inside. Move belongings out from under a leak and catch the water. Notify your insurance agent, and keep any pieces of roofing you find in the yard. Then call us. If the deck is exposed, a tarp or temporary dry-in comes first, and the permanent repair follows once we can see the full extent.
How can I tell hail damage from an old, worn roof?
Hail leaves random, roughly round bruises where granules are crushed in or knocked away, and they are heavier on the slopes that faced the storm. You will usually see matching dents in vents, flashing and downspouts. Wear looks different: it is even across the slope, with curling edges, cracks and general granule loss. We photograph what we find and tell you which one it is.
Will you tell me the insurance company should pay for a new roof?
No. Whether a claim is covered is your insurer’s decision under your policy. What we do is inspect, document the damage with dated photos and give you a written estimate you can pass along. Under Wisconsin law a roofer cannot pay or rebate your deductible, and cannot negotiate the claim for you. Be careful with anyone who offers either.
The screws on my steel shed roof are backing out. Does the whole roof need replacing?
Usually not. On an exposed-fastener roof, the screws and their rubber washers are the part that wears. Metal expands and contracts with every swing in temperature, which works fasteners loose over the years. If the panels themselves are sound, replacing the fasteners with slightly larger ones and resealing the trim is a normal maintenance job. Rusted-through panels or widespread leaks are a different story.
Do you work on farmhouses and outbuildings outside the village?
Yes. We cover the village and the farms around it, along Highway 27 and Highway 29 and the county roads between. Tell us where the property is when you call, and what buildings are involved. We are open 8am–6pm.
